 Description
A diary written by Harriet Halse (1837-1913) in New Plymouth during the events of the First Taranaki War between March and August 1860. Harriet was the wife of William Halse, a lawyer who served with the local militia during the conflict, and she describes both events and the mood in the town - overcrowding and disease caused by settlers coming in from outlying areas, women and children taking shelter at the military barracks on Marsland Hill when alarms are sounded and the various regiments serving in the area.
Inside the diary are a list of accounts for J.T. Shaw and part of a letter written by Harriet to her parents.
