This medallion, of a type sold to raise money for naval orphanages, commemorates the Battle of Jutland on 31 May 1916. It was gifted to Taranaki Museum as part of the collection of prominent south Taranaki lawyer John Houston. According to the Imperial War Museums "The Battle of Jutland was the only time that the British and German fleets of 'dreadnought' battleships actually came to blows. It was a confused and bloody action involving 250 ships and around 100,000 men." For more information see the Imperial War Museums website http://www.iwm.org.uk/history/the-battle-of-jutland#
