A French War Medal 1870-1871. (Medaille de 1870-1871)
The obverse features a left facing helmeted figure representing the French Republic. " REPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE " is marked around it. " Georges / Lemaire " is marked in very small letters in the bottom left quadrant. The reverse features a trophy of arms. " 1870 1871 " is marked at the top. " AUX DEFENSEURS / DE LA PATRIE " is marked on a rectangular plaque. The medal is attached to a green ribbon with four narrow black vertical stripes by a simple suspension ring through a horizontally pierced barrel suspension.

This medal was instituted in November 1911 for award to those with service in the Franco-Prussian War, July 1870 to February 1871.This example was donated to Taranaki Museum as part of a large collection made by the prominent south Taranaki lawyer John Houston.
