A French Tonkin Expedition commemorative medal ( Médaille commémorative de l'expédition du Tonkin ). The silver medal features a helmeted female facing left representing the French Republic." REPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE " is marked around it. ‘ DANIEL DUPUIS ’ is marked in very small text below it. A bound laurel wreath acts as a border. " TONKIN CHINE ANNAM 1883-1885 " is marked on the back bounding the text " SONTAY/ BAC-NINH / FOU-TCHEOU / FORMOSE / TUYEN-QUAN /PESCADORES ". A bound laurel wreath acts as a border. It is attached to a green and yellow vertically striped ribbon by a simple suspension ring through
a laterally pierced barrel suspension.

This medal was created on 6 September 1885 for the soldiers who took part in the operations in Tonkin (now Vietnam), China and Annam from 1883 to 1885. The attribution was later extended to sailors who participated in operations in Tonkin, Annam, Cambodia, Siam (Thailand) and the Upper Mekong (Laos). This example was donated to Taranaki Museum as part of a large collection made by the prominent south Taranaki lawyer John Houston.
