Medal, Italy 1859

A French silver Medal for Italy (Médaille d'Italie) 1859. The obverse features a left facing profile of Emperor Napoleon III wreathed and surrounded by a bound wreath. " NAPOLEON III EMPEREUR " is marked around it. " EARRE" is marked in very small letters under the profile. The reverse features the same bound wreath. " MONTEBELLO / PALESTRO / TURBIGO / MAGENTA / MARIGNAN / SOLERINO " is marked in the centre. It is attached to a red and white striped vertical ribbon.

This medal was issued by Emperor Napoleon III for service during the Franco Austrian War in 1859. See The Fitzwilliam Museum  . This medal was donated to Taranaki Museum as part of the large collection of medals belonging to prominent south Taranaki lawyer John Houston.
