Flag, Parihaka

Production date
1973
Description
Parihaka flag consisting of broad red, brown and navy blue stripes with three white feathers on a scroll. Commissioned by James Mack for an exhibition held at Waikato Art Museum in 1973, focusing on Te Whiti o Rongomai of Parihaka. The design was based on old black and white photographs taken at Parihaka, with scientific tests combined with knowledge of the type of camera film used at the time helping to determine the colours of the original flag.
