Description
A copy negative of a trophy reading ' Presented by Gloucester C.C. to A.E. Wood for Great Bowling Feat 4 WKTS in 4 Successive Balls 28.6.08, Presented to A.E. Wood by Kia Kaha C.C. For his Unique Bowling Average, 6 Wickets for 0 Runs, Gisborne 27.2.15'.
A.E. Wood was born in Gloucester, England. A veteran of the Boer War, he was very capable in several sports. He played for the Gloucester cricket club and in June 1908 achieved the feat of taking four wickets with four successive balls. The Gloucester club had a silver shield inscribed and attached to the ball to acknowledge his feat.
In 1908 Mr. Wood came to New Zealand and settled in Gisborne, joining the Kia Kaha cricket club. In February 1915 he played in a match where Kia Kaha, leading by only 39 runs, needed another ball to finish the game. He willingly removed the silver shield from his ball and offered it for play. He subsequently took six wickets for no runs and Kia Kaha won the game.
The Kia Kaha club re-attached the first silver shield and attached a second plaque, inscribed with Mr. Wood’s most recent memorable feat.
Mr. Wood came to New Plymouth in 1923 and was involved in cricket umpiring and sports coaching. He died in October, 1958, aged 76.
