Is my grandfather James Douglas Hartley born Belfast Ireland, came to NZ at the age of 18 with uncle Arthur or Archie Hannah. Jim married Winifred Castle, (born South Taranaki, the dark haired woman in the group of three Hartley women images you have. You also have a family group, taken with his family, Les (male) Merven, Frank , Jim (James) my mother Beatrice, and Nana Winifred.- in this picture, my mother was 17. Was born 8th November 1921. After my mother discovering his ashes left at an Auckland undertakers for many years with note ...to be collected, she promptly collected them and now Jim has plaque at Te Henui (in the soldiers plot I think) Cemetary. New Plymouth. Jim I believe was part of a group - battalion who were affected by nerve gas in the first word war, which was revealed or confirmed by doctors as a side effect and died about 1963-64 (not too sure of year-just my memory) He was 67 at the age of his death. There was often conversations about the war, and may have been slightly underage when he enlisted to go fight, also conversations about the Egypt come to mind. I was born 1950, and Jim was a painter in Taranaki for the education board, painting schools and owned an old single story house at 47 or 37 Bracken Street New Plymouth, which he housed his mother in law at Zoe Wallis.. (who wasn't our great Aunt.. We were told was Winifred's sister, but was Winifreds mother) I was quite deaf for my first 7 years so have very good memory as I was like a sponge and listened to everything.
