Description
Born on his father's sheep farm at Bell Block Western attended Bell Block Primary School and later Central School. He worked for his father on the farm then took over the management of the farm on his father's retirement. At one time he owned three farms totalling 610 acres - one in Brown Road, one in Wills Road and a third which formed part of the land now used as the New Plymouth Airport.
He founded a Jersey stud, Pukemoana, which was dispersed with some of the lines going to form the Westlyn stud owned by his son Tom Western [Jnr]. He was a member of the New Zealand Jersey Breeders Association.
