A wooden writing box with a hinged lid and purple felt lining the interior writing surface. The box has remnants of a brass band running around the outside edge and an unmarked metal plate in the centre of the lid.

This writing companion came over with Richard and Elizabeth Putt on the William Bryan and has since been handed down from father to son to daughter (1955)" was written on a typed and handwritten note accompanying the box. It was given to Rosalie Barriball (nee Putt) by her father Arthur William Theodore Putt in 1955.
