John Barr hewing stone for the construction of 'Wilkinson's Castle', Pukearuhe. Barr is wearing overalls and a cap and is striking a chisel with a hammer. A small spray of dust is visible where the chisel has struck the stone. The caption beneath a copy of this photograph in Chapman-Taylor's album for 'Wilkinson's Castle' reads: "John Barr - stone mason by trade / Politician for his sins!! so he said / Deputy Speaker of the House / Hewing the stones for his / Friends fireplaces."
