Description
A New Zealand Medal. The silver medal features a left facing profile of Queen Victoria on the obverse. " VICTORIA D:G:BRITT:REG:F.D " is marked around the edge of the profile. A wreath is featured on the reverse with " NEW ZEALAND VIRTUTIS HONOR " marked around the edge of it. " 1861-1866 " is marked in the centre of the wreath. The medal is topped by a straight suspension bar ornamented with fern leaf designs. "O KNUCKEY" is marked on the edge of the medal. The ribbon is missing.

This medal was issued to Oliver Knuckey. He was one of the sons of Nicholas and Zenobia Knuckey, who arrived in New Zealand on the Essex in January 1843. He served in the commisariat corps during the Taranaki Wars and in later life farmed in the Lepperton and Eltham area.
