Description
A sampler on linen which features an alphabet embroidered in the top section and a country scene flanked by two female figures in the bottom section. The sampler also features other floral and botanical designs and an elaborate border. " Betsey Makelin / her work / 1848 " is embroidered at the centre of the sampler. The sampler has been taped on a cardboard backing and was previously framed behind glass.

This sampler was completed by 11-year-old Betsey Makelin in Wales in 1848. Betsey, who later married John Watkin, brought the sampler with her from Wales when she emigrated to Taranaki with her husband and their family in 1881. The Watkin family were one of the first settler families in Cardiff, South Taranaki.
