The ship SS Waiwera docked at the New Plymouth Harbour. The image inscription describes her as the 'first ocean liner,' she was a Shaw Savill 6237 ton steamer, local agents were Newton King. She berthed on the 21 March 1917 to much local celebration and loaded 313 tons of meat.

Ernest Charles Heel (1873-1948) was a New Plymouth photographer who emigrated from England, where he had worked in Leicester and Burton-on-Trent, prior to 1911. He is shown in Devon Street in the 1911 and 1914 Electoral Rolls, but by 1917 was farming at Waitotara. Between 1919 and 1935 he was proprietor of the Railway Hotel in Inglewood, but had retired to live in Auckland by 1946.
