Description
A purple striped taffeta gown. The skirt is full and has cartridge pleating in the back to accommodate a bustle. The jacket is full with a two-piece curved sleeve. There is a wide row of purple kilting near the hem and another near the centre of the skirt. The bodice is fastened at the front by a series of hook and eyes and features a number of purple ornamental buttons. The gown is lined with calico and mesh.

This gown originally belonged to Betsey Watkin, who is thought to have brought it with her from Wales when she emigrated to Taranaki with her husband John Watkin and their family. The Watkin family were one of the early settler families in Cardiff, South Taranaki.
