Description
A group of Maori standing on Moturoa Wharf at New Plymouth Harbour with Commander Price Lewis Junior from the USS Staten Island as the crew watches from the ship. The challenge (wero) of the powhiri was performed by Mr H. (Sonny?) Pratt. The USS Staten Island was an American icebreaker which docked at New Plymouth in 1958 on its way to the Antarctic for Operation Deepfreeze IV. Some of the 247-man crew were billeted to local homes and took part in a range of activities during their six-day stay, including hunting, fishing and dancing.
