Description
Around 150 crew from the USS Staten Island parading down Devon Street, New Plymouth. A crowd of 10,000 locals watched the parade. The USS Staten Island was an American icebreaker ship which docked at New Plymouth in 1958 on its way to the Antarctic for Operation Deepfreeze IV. Some of the 247-man crew were billeted to local homes and took part in a range of activities during their six-day stay, including hunting, fishing and dancing.
