 Description
A King's South Africa medal. The obverse features a bust of King Edward VII in filed marshal's uniform. " EDWARDVS VII REX IMPERATOR " is embossed around the outside. Britannia holding a flag and a laurel out towards a crowd below her is featured on the reverse. " SOUTH AFRICA" is embossed near the top. "3847 SAPR. M. O'CONNELL. R.E." is marked on the edge of the medal. The medal is attached to a ribbon of three equal stripes of green, white and orange which is mounted on cardboard. Two clasps are mounted on it. " SOUTH AFRICA 1901" and " SOUTH AFRICA 1902 ".

This medal was gifted to Taranaki Museum as part of a collection made by south Taranaki lawyer John Houston. It was issued to Sapper M. O'Connell of the British Royal Engineers. According to the New Zealand Defence Force to qualify for the King's South Africa Medal a soldier or nurse had to be serving in South Africa on or after 1 January 1902, and have completed 18 months' total service before 1 June 1902. Approximately 200 New Zealand military personnel, and six New Zealand nurses, were awarded the King's South Africa Medal.
