Description
A Queen's South Africa Medal. The silver medal features the Jubilee bust of Queen Victoria on the obverse. " VICTORIA REGINA ET IMPERATRIX " is embossed around the edge of the profile. Britannia holding a flag and a laurel out towards a crowd below her is featured on the reverse. " SOUTH AFRICA" is embossed near the top. "722 TPR. J. MITCHELL. BETHUNE'S M.I. " is marked on the edge of the medal. A red ribbon with two narrow blue stripes and a broad central orange stripe is attached to the medal which has been mounted on cardboard. It bears six clasps. " LAING'S NEK " " TRANSVAAL " "RELIEF OF LADYSMITH " " ORANGE FREE STATE " TUGELA HEIGHTS " and " CAPE COLONY ".

This medal was gifted to Taranaki Museum as part of a collection made by south Taranaki lawyer John Houston. According to the New Zealand Defence Force ten contingents of the New Zealand Mounted Rifles, totalling 6,128 officers and men, and a contingent of 31 New Zealand nurses served in South Africa from 1899-1902.
