Description
A Khedive's Sudan Medal. The silver medal features an Arabic inscription which translates as Abbas Hilmi the Second and the date 1314 (AD1897). The reverse features an oval shield surrounded by flags and weapons. The medal is attached to the yellow ribbon with a blue stripe by a plain straight suspension bar. " KHARTOUM "and " SUDAN 1897" are embossed on clasps attached to the ribbon. The ribbon is mounted on cardboard and the medal has been mounted with the reverse visible.

This medal was awarded by the Khedive of Egypt in February 1897 to members of the Royal Navy and British and Egyptian armeis for service in Sudan from 1896-1908. It was donated to Taranaki Museum as part of a collection made by prominent south Taranaki lawyer John Houston.
