It is highly likely the elderly woman seated is Jean Sandel’s mother, Mary Jessie Sandel, who lived with Jean at 98 Pendarves Street New Plymouth. According to NPDC burial records Mary died on 30 June 1973, aged 84. The photograph also appears to have been taken in at the Sandel’s Pendarves Street home, judging by the board and batten house in the background. This is one of the group of five houses in the area known as the ‘hen and chickens’.

I understand a doctor at New Plymouth hospital for her working life.
