It's a Db class loco (slightly smaller than a Da). Either No 1003 or 1007 - which matches the Db class.

The train is a Da, the first diesel train used in mainline running in the North Island. The first Da's were introduced in 1955 and final one was withdrawn in 1989. There were a total of 146 Da's overall.
