Description
A heavy totara cross beam from a memorial cross that was erected to mark the grave of Rawiri Waiaua, Corbett Rd, Bell Block. " HE POU WHAKAMAHARA / KI A RAWIRI WAIAUA ME ONA HOA I HINOA I TENI TAKIWA / I TE 3 O NGA RA O AKUHAIA 1854 OA RATOU E HAPAI / ANA I TE MANA O TE KAWANATANGA " is engraved on the front of the cross beam. The beam has remnants of red paint near the centre and in some of the letters. A niche is carved in the centre of the reverse where the cross beam would be attached to the vertical post and a rusted metal shaft protrudes from the reverse of the niche.

This cross beam was part of the memorial cross erected to mark the grave of Rawiri Waiaua, Corbett Rd, Bell Block. The cross was one of a series of three which are thought to have been erected in 1909. The crosses were replaced by concrete versions in 1941.
