This badge was awarded to Drum Major Neil Shepherd on 3 March 1923 after he led the Fourth Wellington Regiment brass band, which was based in New Plymouth, to victory in the B Grade division of the North Island Brass Band Association Championships. According to a Taranaki Herald report of the competition was held in front of a crowd of about 12,000 at Pukekura Park. The band also picked up a 35 pound prize for their efforts. His family remembers Mr Shepherd always had a great affinity with musical instruments and seemed to able to pick up any instrument and play it.
