Description
Kahui Road Creamery, the first factory on Upper Kahui Road. Built by Jacob Rothery around 1895, the creamery later became part of the Crown Dairy Company which sold it along with their Oaonui factory to the new Oaonui Dairy Cooperative in 1896. In 1908 this building was replaced with a new structure and in 1912 the Kahui Cooperative Dairy Company was formed and bought the creamery from Oaonui. The Kahui Co-operative Dairy converted the new building to a cheese factory which burnt down in 1928. It was rebuilt in reinforced concrete but suffered extensive fire damage in 1949. In 1957 Kahui Dairy Cooperative merged with Cape Dairy Co-operative and the Kahui factory became a community hall.

The original Kahui Road dairy factory was built by Jacob Rothery who had previously built Taranaki's second ever dairy factory in Pihama. Descendants have original photographs of both.

The Kahui Dairy Co-op Ltd was severely damaged by fire on 12/2/1949. It had been re-built and opened again by 13/8/1949. The Rahotu Dairy Co-op Ltd processed the Kahui Dairy Co-op suppliers milk during the re-build.

Crown Dairy Co. sold the Kahui Creamery along with their Oaonui Factory to the new Oaonui Dairy Coopertaive in 1896. In 1908 this building was replaced with a new structure. In 1912 the Kahui Cooperative Dairy Co. was formed and bought the Creamery from the Oaonui Dairy Cooperative. The Kahui Co-operative Dairy converted the the new building to a 2 vat cheese factory which was burnt down in 1928. It was rebuilt in reinforced concrete and suffered extensive fire damage in 1950. In 1957 Kahui Dairy Cooperative merged with Cape Dairy Co-operative based at Pungarehu. The Kahui factory became a Community Hall.
