Description
Premises of E. M. Smith, licensed gun maker, Devon Street, New Plymouth. Three men stand on the front steps of the shop while another two men occupy the footpath outside the store. It has been speculated that the owner, Edward Metcalf Smith stands on the step in the main entrance. Edward was the Armourer to the Colonial Forces in Taranaki as well as Member of Parliament for the Liberal Party in Taranaki for thirteen years.

Edward Metcalf Smith was my gt gt grandfather. I'm not sure who is who in this photo. Edward was the Armourer to the Colonial Forces in Taranaki as well as Member of Parliament for the Liberal Party in Taranaki for 13 years. His father in law was Sergeant Nicholas Golding of the 65th Regiment, also based in New Plymouth. Edward's good friend Thomas Joseph Hickman was a member of New Zealand Armed Constabulary and also the Mounted Sergeant in charge at Urenui. Edward and Thomas [Joe] both married daughters of Nicholas Golding.
