Description
A Chautauqua Industrial Art desk. The wooden desk is a folding adjustable frame fitted with compartments, a work desk surface and a chalk board. The interior of the desk is fitted with a large scroll with various panels of educational information on them. Examples of content include simple shapes, line drawings of various scenes, a diagram of a piano keyboard, examples of "The Palmer Method of Business Writing", telegraphic codes and shorthand. A 1913 resource map of America is mounted on the reverse of the desk. " The Chautauqua Industrial Art Desk / A plan to promote the culture of work and play / among children in the home. / Lewis E Myers & Company / Producers and Exclusive Distributors/ Valparaiso. Ind. USA. " is written on the first scroll with a picturesque scene in the background. The instructional booklets and writing equipment which are designed to accompany the desk and the lessons on the scroll are missing.
