The Taranaki Clean Sea Action Group was formed in April 1980 to lead the protest against the New Plymouth City Council's proposal to build a 1,600 metre outfall for untreated sewage at Waiwakaiho, and the effects of the disposal of waste from the proposed petrochemical industries.
The controversy became a key issue in the Council election of that year. The Group launched a successful counter-proposal for a sewage treatment station.
The records include newspaper clippings; reports; audits, and correspondence; submissions to the Waitangi Tribunal, the Taranaki Catchment Commission and the Commission for the Environment.
