Name/Title
An enthusiastic amateur archaeologist, Dick Jonas collected information on various sites in the Urenui, Onaero, Pukearuhe district. His extensive notes include drawings, measurements, locality of finds and archaeological digs, ownership of artefacts, maps and plans and diary type notes of visits to people and places. He collaborated with A. G. Buist who produced Archaeology in North Taranaki, New Zealand a study of field monuments in the Pukearuhe - Mimi-Urenui area. New Zealand Archaeological Association, 1964.
Dick Jonas was also an enthusiastic amateur photographer and captured many images of the areas, and people he lived and worked amongst
Many of his artefacts are housed in the Taranaki Museum (Puke Ariki).
Jonas died on the 4th July 1996 aged 85 years.
The collection also includes information on the Jonas family with an extensive photographic collection which includes local inhabitants of the Urenui, Motunui, Waitoetoe areas and photographs of oil exploration in the Urenui area.
