A group of ten men with the #295 Baldwin Locomotive (c.1898). Locomotive is on wooden slides in the bush. Twelve locomotives were ordered from the American manufacturer Baldwin in 1898. These were distributed to Northland (one), Wellington/Napier/New Plymouth (four), and Westport (two). This photograph is similar to that showing a de-railed ballast train in Taranaki taken by C.F.Volzke (possibly at Waipuku). The brakes failed on the train when it was descending a steep incline. The driver, fireman, and guard escaped injury by jumping clear before the impact (as reported in 'The Auckland Weekly News' Jan 9th 1914).

Franz Zimmerman was born 11 Sept 1848 in West Prussia, Poland. In 1874 he married Barbara Zeller in Poland and they later emigrated to Wellington, New Zealand, arriving in 1876. Franz stands in front of a door. The door is slightly ajar. He wears a suit and a hat and stands with the aid of a walking stick. Franz Zimmerman died 27 September1938.

His hair is centrally parted. He was the son of Joseph and Joanna Zimmerman.

All wear striped rugby jerseys except the boy in the centre of the front row who wears a plain, lighter coloured shirt. All wear long socks and dark shorts. Behind the boys there is a window set into an alcove on the left with a vase of flowers on the sill. Behind the boys on the right is a wall with decorative detailing. The boy standing second from the right in the back row has been identified as John Goodwin, son of Arthur and Agnes Goodwin of Oakura.
