Name/Title
A large brass protractor with a " V " support in the middle. Scale around the upper outside edge reads from 0 to 180 degrees - both from left to right and right to left. " Adie, London " is engraved at the top. A copper coloured raised circle inserted into the middle base of instrument has a tiny piece of glass with a small " X " scratched in the middle. c.1841. It is held in a flat rectangular wooden case with a hinged lid. The base has three pieces of wood to hold the protractor in position. Two white labels adhered to inside of lid. " ADIE / OPTICIAN / Mathematical & Philosophical / Instrument Makers / 395 Strand / LONDON " is written on one. " As far as investigation shows this protractor was brought to New Plymouth by Carrington Bros in 1841, and is part of the Original Survey Equipment supplied by the Plymouth Company " is hand written in red and black ink on another label. The box has two hooks on the front for fastening.

The lock plate is marked " B S A & M Co / 1878 " along with a crown and " V.R " . "1" and a sold from service mark along with " 1 " is marked on the butt. A faint " NZ " and an illegible number is also marked on the stock. A cleaning rod accompanies the carbine.
