Fulgurite

Piece of brown fulgurite, shaped similar to a tree branch. The cylindrical shape of the main rock curves and then branches into two sections at the end. The fulgurite has a rough, uneven surface. There are variations in the brown colouring, from light tan to deep red, and light-coloured flecks visible overall. The larger end has a melted, lumpy texture to the centre.

Many of these labels also include location information. The box is rectangular with a hinged lid and is covered with an embossed gold coloured paper. The hinged lid is lined and fitted with a label on the top and underside which features a hei tiki design. " MINERAL SPECIMENS / OF / NEW ZEALAND " is marked on the label along with fern and kowhaiwhai type patterns. " SET X1 / CARNEGIE " 96 PIECES " is marked on a paper label stuck to the underside of the lid.

A relatively small fossilised crab (tumidocarcinus giganteus) encased within an oval siltstone concretion. The upperside of crab is visible - smooth, evenly rounded, but somewhat flattened back to its carapace - fine raised dots all over the surface. Parts of the legs have broken away - presumably with other half of concretion. Both chelae are hidden under concretion.

A paramoudra trace fossil with a hole at the top and cylindrical cavity at centre. The cavity has a porous, bone coloured, fossilised surface. At the bottom of the cavity are several worm-like forms. The fossil is ovoid in shape when viewed from above and has distinctive nipped lower half when viewed from the side.
