The New Zealand Insurance Company Ltd's New Plymouth building was designed by Thomas Bates in 1920 and situated in Devon Street East, located on the lower part of the south side of the 'Devon St hill' not far from the corner of Devon and Currie Streets. It was demolished in the 1970s or 1980s.
The folder contains a copy of the building specifications, a photocopy of photographs of the Devon Street frontage (possibly in the image collection), a covering letter from Bruce Henderson Keith Scott & Partners Oct 30 1980s a plan of the building copied by Bruce Henderson Keith Scott and Partners from the original drawing by Thomas Bates.

Plan of a proposed maternity home at 55 Gover Street, New Plymouth for Mrs Ellis (known as Sister Ellis) showing ground and drainage plan, first floor plan, elevations and cross section drawn by Thomas Bates 1928.
Built in 1928 by Boon Brothers and named Timata Ora, the house operated as a maternity hospital until 1957 when it was closed and converted into a private residence. The home is currently run as Timata Ora Bed & Breakfast.

In 1874 the military barracks on Marsland Hill, New Plymouth were converted into an immigration depot and used in this capacity for a number of years until 1891 when the building was condemned and part was given to the North Egmont Forest Board for use as an accommodation house at North Egmont and the remainder was dismantled.
