He is wearing military uniform and is looking away from the camera. A painted backdrop is visible in the background. He was born in 1844 in Dublin, Ireland. After completing his medical training, he emigrated to New Zealand, later marrying Alice Carrington, second daughter of Octavius Carrington at St Mary's Church, New Plymouth on 27 October1869. After suffering ill health, he returned to Dublin and died there on 14 August 1903.
