The portrait is contained within a leather-bound case, possibly removed from a lidded case. A metal ring is attached to the top of the case.

Ambrotype studio portrait of Simeon Howell. Howell is seated in a chair next to a table. He holds a book or document in both of his hands. He is wearing a suit with a waistcoat, shirt and cravat. A tie pin and watch chain have been hand painted onto the photograph in gold paint. The ambrotype is framed with an embossed gold metal matt with patterned metal edging. The photograph is housed in a plain leather case. The lid of the case is lined with orange embossed velvet. A hook clasp is mounted on the left hand side of the case. Simeon Howell and his wife Elizabeth Howell (nee Jennings) arrived in Wellington, New Zealand, in December 1840 aboard the "London", along with other New Zealand Company settlers. They arrived in New Plymouth aboard the "Brougham" on 10 May 1842.

Hand tinted ambrotype portrait of Bennet Pascoe Perry. Perry is seated and is resting one arm on a table covered with a patterned cloth. His other hand rests on his leg. He is wearing a suit with a bow tie. His face and hands are tinted pink. The table cloth is also tinted. Damage has occured to the surface of the ambrotype - the photograph appears to have been touched up by hand as a result of the damage. The portrait is framed by a plain gold metal matt and is housed in a plain wooden frame with metal edging around the frame's window. A flower hook has been attached to the upper edge of the frame.

The lid of the case is missing. Two hook clasps are mounted on the left hand side of the case.

All three men are wearing suits. The two unidentified men are wearing bow ties that have been tinted blue. The man on the right of the image has had his fob chain, ring and hat tinted with gold paint. Sam Oliver and the man in the centre are holding glasses. A decanter and another glass sit on the table along with an unidentified object. The faces and hands of the men have been very lightly tinted pink. They are posed against an elaborately painted backdrop featuring a path through trees. The portrait is framed by an embossed gold metal matt with patterned metal edging, which is then contained within an ornately carved dark wooden frame.
