Alice Barbara Sumner (known as Barbara) lived in New Plymouth with her mother and father at the beginning of 1924. Daily entries in the diary show that in early 1924 she travelled to Urenui to work for a family as a governess. In February she took up a position of governess for the Lysaght family in Mokoia. She often mentions the children she cared for, Briony and Jimmy as well as Mr, Mrs and Miss Lysaght. Averil Lysaght is written to have visited several times throughout the year. She writes often of the various visitors to the Lysaght homestead. She mentions local families, such as the Hawkens. The diary also includes personal entries such as when she washed her hair, items she had bought, what the weather was like, attendance to sick lambs, trips to the beach and fishing adventures. At the end of 1924 she retires from her duties with the Lysaght family to take up a position as a mistress for a household school in Waverley.
