Samuel Joll and his sons are all formally dressed. The boys wear matching smocks with light-coloured collars and neck ties. The son on Joll's left hand side is holding a hat. The group are arranged in an elaborate studio setting that includes a painted backdrop of Mount Taranaki, an ornate chair and a curtain.

The students are drinking with straws out of glass bottles. All the students have turned to face the photographer. Several of the also raise their bottles to the photographer. Joseph and Mary Wooldridge are gathered with their five sons in a grassy area in front of some large trees. Jospeh and Mary are seated infront of their sons, they hold a large framed photographic portrait of a man between them.The framed picture is that of Harry Wooldridge, whom passed tragically in 1906 on a ship SS Valencia, the wreck of 1906. The five sons stand in a row behind their parents and have been identified as, from left to right, Joseph, Eb, Stan, Bert and Ernest. The sons wear flowers in their button holes.

All four members excluding Tom are dressed in suits with Tom having an apron on and a white shirt. There are two small children playing to the left of the store that are just visible in the photograph.

A vase of flowers sits on the table. Mrs Faull is wearing a dress, gloves, a cloak and a bonnet. She is looking directly at the camera. A curtain is visible on the left of the image. Patterned carpet is partially visible. Mrs Faull arrived in New Plymouth on the "William Bryant" settler ship with husband Richard and their four children on 30 March 1841.

A table is visible on the left of the image. It is covered with a tassled table cloth and is supporting a vase of flowers. A curtain is also visible on the left. The carpet is patterned. John and Agnes Veale arrived in New Plymouth aboard the "Hamilla Mitchell" settler ship on 3 February 1854. They were accompanied by a number of their children.

A woman is seated on the edge of the verandah and a young boy, wearing a sailor suit, is standing at the top of steps leading from the verandah to the garden. 'Fleetwood' cottage was bought by Hal Goodacre in circa 1883.

Roy Charters and Rowan Guthrie, wearing military uniform, pictured at Bell Block, New Plymouth. Guthrie is seated on the right and has a pipe in his mouth. Charters is standing next to him with his hands in his pockets. An image of a military aircraft is visible behind them. Both men were posted to the military base in New Plymouth in 1944 and became good friends while they were there. Charters had purchased Arthur Glanville-Clark's studio in 1938, which was run by Charters' wife Shirley during the war. Charters and Guthrie eventually decided to go into business together, Rowan Guthrie buying into the business in circa 1950. Their firm, Charters and Guthrie, became very well known and respected in New Plymouth.

The four other men are staning in the back. The man third from the left in the front row is petting a dog which is seated at his feet.

Yems, Honeyfield and Lethbridge are standing behind Reid, Looney, Brooking and Newell, who are seated. All seven men are wearing suits and hats. Gold paint has been used to draw in fob chains on three of the seven men. The names of the men have been handwritten directly onto the emulsion surface. The ambrotype has no matting or case.
